Road to Rome quilt block

Italy in the summertime. What could be better? I can only speculate as I have never been, but I will get there someday.

On that note, today's featured quilt block is called Road to Rome. If you are a beginner quilter, then this block is one for you. You will practice using the two most commonly pieced patches that are found in oh so many quilts -- the half square triangle and the flying geese units.

The two sample quilts shown below are both designed to continue with simplicity. The quilt on the left uses an on point setting and features extra, blank blocks to showcase your quilting designs. The quilt on the right sets the quilt blocks side by side, separated with sashing strips. Both are striking versions.

Mr. Shakespeare knows a thing or two about geese

Starlight Geese quilt block
The Starlight Geese quilt block uses my favourite patch - the flying geese unit. These "geese" are flying in the night sky around the star in the centre. The star makes a pinwheel shape, a favourite of many quilters. This quilt block is an easy one, once you get the hang of making flying geese patches -- which is quite a simple task.

Even though I have stayed with the "idea" of the geese flying in starlit sky with my colour choices, you can come up with many variations, just by switching up the colours.

Thoughts about geese

William Shakespeare
  • "What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander."
    ~ William Shakespeare

  • "The art of taxation consists in so plucking the goose as to get the most feathers with the least hissing."
    ~ Jean Baptist Colbert

  • "If you feel the urge, don't be afraid to go on a wild goose chase. What do you think wild geese are for anyway?"
    ~ Will Rogers

March came in like a lion ...

I'm a little behind in my upkeep of this blog, but I have a good reason. Since March came along and was/is so blustery and cold where I live, I decided to take off for warmer climates for a brief respite. Now, I am back and hoping that March leaves like a lamb, (or so the saying goes).

This past month I have created 5 more new quilt block patterns for you to download. These quilt blocks range from easy to more challenging, and feature half square triangles, rectangles and one of my favourite patches ... the flying geese units.

  • Sparkle Star is for those quilters who are comfortable with their piecing skills, as it is a little more challenging than many blocks

  • Arkansas Traveller is an easy block and a good choice for beginners

  • Starlight Geese features the flying geese units

  • Log Cabin is probably one of the most well known quilt blocks and was very popular around the time of the Civil War in the United States

  • Road to California was fun to play around with as an exercise in colour (for me)

And speaking of lions ...
"After 'The Wizard Of Oz' I was typecast as a lion, and there aren't all that many parts for lions."
~ Bert Lahr
